Innovative Ideas in Educator Compensation Reform
Teacher Compensation Policies
Teacher Compensation Policies describe the conditions under which teachers are paid. Historically, teacher compensation has been determined based on two main criteria: (1) education level and (2) years of teaching experience. Teacher compensation policies that go beyond these two criteria frequently are labeled as alternative. For example, in alternative compensation systems, teachers could receive additional pay for working in a hard-to-staff school, teaching a hard-to-staff subject, or acquiring additional knowledge and skills. Other alternative compensation systems include pay for performance, career ladders, and market-based pay.
